I have a very similar problem with 2.0.35, however it only seems to occur if "Use OpenCL" is checked when rendering an animation. OS X 11.1. I have a Stopping SL set, but it appears as "Sampling level: nan" same as @owensch.

@owensch to help debug this for Nick, can you work around by unchecking OpenCL as well, and do you get correct behaviour?

Apologies for the delay in replying - I've been working on another art project. So, I've run the animation with Use OpenCL unchecked and it all works as it should. I concur with @Icg's findings.
