yes I have read the rendering FAQ several times and it doesn't really adress these issues.
I am running Windows 7 which only uses about 216 MB of RAM for the system, if Windows 7 used 2 GB of RAM how would it be possible to run Windows 7 with only 1 GB? yet it is. And Chaotica is the only program I have running currently. So what you are telling me doesn't exactly add up.
According to the Rendering FAQ using Ultra level should use less RAM, but when I try to render at ultra settings for the same sized image, the software crashes. I would be happy to buy more RAM but I'm not really confident this software is any more likely to work once I do, since according to the rendering FAQ you keep directing me to, it should be working already, but it is not.
Now if you have a another solution I'd be happy to hear it, but as it is, this is simply not working as advertised.
I wonder if you could print screen your chaotica main window when you get this bug.
In a way that it shows the 4 things below:
1. Width
2. Height
3. AA Level
4. The error message
A side note: "doesn´t work as advertised". I think you are a bit too quick to jump with such accusations. For example, my version of chaotica works just fine, and i never had any unexplained memory issues.
Also, lyc kept asking you about the AA level, and you never mentioned what AA levels did you try. Just saying, AA level is what has most impact on the RAM usage.
I agree with you that windows is not the issue. You can hog up to all avaliable RAM with chaotica and it will in theory work. In practice, if you do that, windows will go on a strike and produce some MASSIVE lag (did such experiment once, by setting the max possible resolution, and my pc would just freeze for 20 min after each mouse movement, poor thing

).
